You can’t dream
when you’re busy surviving
You can’t fly
when you don’t know you have wings
You can’t see
while wearing the blindfolds of pain
So open your eyes
spread your wings
Fly as high as you can
past pleasure and pain
Fly as fast as you can
from your nightmares to your dreams

I love the way you cranked up your poem with the ‘You can’ts’ until the release of:
‘So open your eyes
spread your wings
Fly as high as you can’.
It’s like taking a deep breath before you jump, Viv!

I felt the “you can’t”s as strictures and constraints, and then the sudden call to freedom burst in. Lovely structure.

Even if it’s not always possible, it’s lovely to think it might be. Love the idea of soaring beyond it all.

I have been thinking about the injunction to fly “past pleasure and pain.” Flying past pain seems obvious, but flying on past pleasure turns the poem a little further inward for me. Why would anyone fly past pleasure? Could it be that pain is the second stop past pleasure that opens a door beyond them both to a deeper joy and meaning than what pleasure alone can bring? I guess that those who remain stuck in a pleasure fixation never soar with the power your poem reveals. Nicely done, thank you Viv.

Great insight! Pleasure can be a distraction when you’re aiming for the goal. Thank you 😊

Fly high, sail and soar to your dreams. That’s wonderful advice. See if I can dig mine out of the hall closet

Nothing like acting fast to achieve one’s dreams. Often times it involves a question of choices!
