Compassion become a curse
Open hearts become trampled on
Meaningful gestures get misinterpreted
Pitying become so despised
Acts of kindness become easily forgotten
Selflessness become such a rarity
Sheltering a lost soul become dangerous
Inner reflection become a joke
Open spirits slam shut like books
Natural empathy become lost to us?

Excellent acrobatic and good questions all of them. I think we have had hints of this but it is only in the age of trump that we have gotten so bad.

You raise some really pertinent questions here. Empathy seems to be a dirty word these days.

Great acrostic. It is hard to find empathy, at the store, the bank, church. Everybosy’s all, “have a nice day”. We just have to carry an extra measure to share. Good word Vivian!

A strong expression of the sad state we are in and a topic I feel very strongly about. Empathy is taught, modeled, nurtured through nurturing. I believe desensitization by social media, violence in games, movies….all this changes the brains of our children. We are deconstructing the compassion we teach them early by poisoning them with media garbage. They lose imagination, creativity, fresh air, eye contact, social skills. Sorry for my little rant. Your poem is very moving, Vivian.

Great job Vivian! Love the acrostic… so sad that we can’t learn to agree to disagree instead of simply lashing out at those who think differently!

It’s a slow erosion but glares once one enumerates, as you have done here, all the losses entailed. Salute.

We each have a responsibility for putting out there in the universe kindness and compassion … especially now when the antithesis of all good things seems disseminated everywhere we look.

This goes straight to the heart! And I’ve been asking myself the very same question. When did it happen? How? Without drifting off into cliches and platitudes. And I think that confronted with so much evil, some people just simply give up. So they need that reminder.
