According to Greek Mythology, Narcissus was the son of the river god Cephissus and nymph Liriope . His fame is centred around this one story (summarised):
Narcissus was once walking by a lake or river and decided to drink some water; he saw his reflection in the water and was surprised by the beauty he saw; he became enamoured by the reflection of himself. He could not obtain the object of his desire though, and he died at the banks of the river or lake from his sorrow.
Now fast forward to 2017. I recently observed my daughter spending quite some time gazing into her phone. Pouting this way and that. I interrupted her preening to tell her the story of Narcissus. She was entranced by the story and I was just getting to make my point when her phone ‘dinged’ again. That was it, I’d lost my audience and worse, failed to make my point. There she was, once again smiling, hair flicking and pouting at instagram or snapchat.
Determined to finish I pressed on, “.. and he DIED staring at himself!”
“Huh- hmmm,” she absently replied, turning her head for a perfect profile selfie.
I haven’t given up yet. I’ll be sending this post to her email with the subject line : “THE MONEY’S RUN OUT!” – that ought to get her attention.

Haha. Tell me about this crazy new fad of gazing into the phones or even the selfie culture. It’s really upsetting sometimes as people no longer pay attention to their immediate surroundings, due to the addictive nature of these digital gadgets. 🙂 Btw, you just reminded me of that story that story again. I enjoyed the read. Thanks for sharing. 🙂
