A park bench
daring to close just one eye
-as history sidles up to me
“Remember freedom?
Without the handcuffs of the social-distance
police in your periphery?”
I sigh…….
as freshly trapped air thrashes in the mesh
of my mask
Yup…….those were the days

I like the description of social distance as “handcuffs”.

Thanks Frank…I was actually referring to the police on stand-by (ready to arrest you if you dare sit outside!)

Sigh. I long to go back to February’s normal, or perhaps to skip ahead to June’s.

Here in AZ we can still go outside, but that could change in a heartbeat. Well said Vivian.

Police are still only used to hunt criminals not to harass someone sitting on a park-bench… It surprises me that we so willingly accept all the changes that have been implemented.

You have captured a true slice of life here.
These lines spoke to me, “as freshly trapped air thrashes in the mesh
of my mask.”

Perfect! Just perfect! You’ve captured what it’s like….and most especially that feeling of the trapped air within my mask! It is a surreal world we are living through….I use “through” in the definite hope that we will come out on the other side. Stay safe!

What a delightful poem! You’ve perfectly captured that natural exasperation that comes with everything we’re going through, but feel slightly uncomfortable expressing.
