Were they not words that created the world?
But for words, our world would
be as silent as the grave
and darkness would still hover over the deep where the nights are not dark enough
How would the vision be written
for others to run with it?
How would we be able to
break or build
cajole or deter
bless or curse?Thoughts and dreams
prayers and anguish
-all would be powerless
without words
and only laughter and screams
would remain© Vivian Zems

I’ve always found extremes–good or bad–to be slightly terrifying. So, yeah… the closing lines made me shudder a bit. What a world that would be, indeed.

This poem is so richly evoked in your own voice, Viv, it took me a while to find my words! Thank you for participating i this prompt. It is so cool to have my words combined with yours!

Those closing lines….yikes….we are almost at that point these days – at least I am, when I watch the news. LOL.

Yes, in the beginning was the word, and there have been so many words since to break the silence, including blessing and cursing. You’ve written such a powerful piece here, Viv, and the thought of only laughter and screams will haunt me for the rest of the day.

That and an occasional grunt I think… but I do think we can come a long way with laughter

Goodness yes, what would we do without them? I would love to have talents for singing, dancing, sculpting, painting … but if I had to choose only one thing, I’d choose the one I have and be a wordsmith all over again.
