I heard it once said that “a nest is built with broken branches“. The realisation of the truth in this statement can only come with experience. In the same vein, there are those songs that only make sense when sung in the light at the end of the tunnel.
I’m thrilled to share one of the poems from my forthcoming poetry chapbook, “Lift Off!”
If I had known
that a nest so beautiful
needed to be built
with broken branches
I would not have
……cried at the tearing
……nor sobbed at the ripping
……or despaired at
the breaking
of the branches
of me

Great thought… we need to break a few things to make a wonderful nest.

The things we would be able to do if we care to remember the old saying that “what doesn’t kill us makes us stronger”. That it what this fantastic poem brings to mind. It makes me think of how tears that lead to grows can be just the cleansing we need.

I had never thought of a person having ‘branches,’ but your poem made me contemplate that. A powerful reflection.

Hi Mary, in this poem, my ‘branches’ are all my senses, my mind, body, soul, spirit etc, etc. Thanks for reading.

I wonder if other mammals hurt the way we do regarding the loss of partners. I think perhaps the higher we are up the tree the more we feel affection for each other…and the more we hurt too! Very thoughtful poem Vivian.

What a beautiful poem, and you are so right, no need to cry…whatever it is, isn’t the worst of it… yet…there is more to come, but with each, comes an opportunity. It is how we become the “deeper women, we are meant to be.”

Hey, Vivian. And we can make that nest the best we can. One thing to remember, those birds seldom broke the branches themselves. Branches of tree not themselves.

Absolutely, Jim. If only the birds had the gift of poetry to turn their wings into flaming curtains….or something. Metaphors are so liberating, no?
