I’ve joked in the past about how much I hate it when my heart skips a beat – or leaps. The inevitable hammering afterwards is most unpleasant! That said, I’ve decided to add a layer of grief and shock to this scenario.

This kevlar vest
-made from bitter teflon
stitched without emotion
and zipped up with gritty
determination
did nothing to stop my
heart from beating itself to death
– a bullet would have been safer
