I’d always pooh-poohed rap I didn’t understand…until I came across this poem by the late Tupac Shakur. I found it to be- not only inspiring but it resonated deeply. RIP Tupac!
When no one even cared
The rose it grew from concrete
Keepin’ all these dreams
Provin’ nature’s laws wrong
It learned how to walk without havin’ feet
It came from concrete
Did you hear about the rose that grew from a crack in the concrete?
Provin’ nature’s laws wrong it learned how to walk without havin’ feet
Funny it seems but, by keepin’ its dreams
It, learned to breathe FRESH air
Long live the rose that grew from concrete
When no one else even cared
No one else even cared..
The rose that grew from concrete
Keepin’ all these dreams
Provin’ nature’s laws wrong
It learned how to walk without havin’ feet (to breathe the fresh air)
It came from concrete (to breathe the fresh air)
(to breathe the fresh air, to breathe the fresh air)

I am always amazed with I see flowers and weeds growing up out of cracked concrete. The resilience is so strong and it should give all of us hope and strength. Great poem Vivian!

Many singers write poetic lyrics, like Leonard Cohen and Jim Morrison.. What a nice surprise that Tupac can be added to the list.

Such a good metaphor for life, I believe. Most years we have little forget-me-nots that make their way through a crack in the concrete. They’ve shown up in a few of my poems, too.

pretty soon those roses will be tearing up the whole dang sidewalk, and don’t get me started on the house foundation! 😉
I do like this Viv, seriously, to be able to thrive in a difficult environment takes a special persevereance, and often also at least a small opening of some sort. I guess there is hope for some of the seeds that are sown on rocky ground.
