We walk in the wilderness
adorned with literacy
cloaked in sophistication
yet lacking in wisdomWe exult in our knowledge
oblivious of our creator
so – when bitten by vipers
of sickness and depravity…we seek the eyes
of the bronze serpent* of salvation
that we may be healed
from our own transgressions

*Numbers 21:6-9
6Then the Lord sent venomous snakes among them; they bit the people and many Israelites died. 7The people came to Moses and said, “We sinned when we spoke against the Lord and against you. Pray that the Lord will take the snakes away from us.” So Moses prayed for the people.
8The Lord said to Moses, “Make a snake and put it up on a pole; anyone who is bitten can look at it and live.” 9So Moses made a bronze snake and put it up on a pole. Then when anyone was bitten by a snake and looked at the bronze snake, they lived.

Hmm. I think I’ll go with antivenin on an I.V. pole.

A totem offering salvation – I like that as we’ve all been bit at one time or another …

This is an interesting response to the prompt. I like “cloaked in sophistication yet lacking in wisdom”. A wise view of today’s world.

I like the opening lines, Viv, which certainly apply to the world today. I wonder where the modern bronze serpent of salvation will come from.

I imagine the caduceus symbol in the bronze snake emblem, used by doctors to heal rather than the snake of original sin. I like the way you offered hope at the end.

Serpents wind the healing caduceus of Hermes – that symbol became the logo of the American Medical Association. There must be some innate knowledge that like cures like. Here the bronze serpent seems to remind us of the fundamental nature of our sins, our need to cleanse and be made whole again.

I love the religious tone of this poem, The first stanza says much about human nature. In the end, it seems, many of us seek the bronze serpent… We are sinful beings and CANNOT heal ourselves!

Oh yes, that’s how aloof we are, that only after being bitten, we look for salvation. I really like the symbolism here.

I wonder if bronze representations of certain world leaders could help people come to their senses about the poison they spew.

Most of us fail by not living better lives, it is a human trait. I am not sure staring a bronze serpent would help much except to show you were remorseful! However I found the poem to be a delight to read.

Nice reading, Vivian. If I were Moses I would have my stick carved as to be pretty enough to warrant holding a bronze snake. I had forgotten that it was bronze.
