June 15th marked the end of exam season in the UK. Thousands of students, my son included, sat their school- leaving exams (GCSE’s). In our household, it was also a landmark because the baby of the house had crossed this much-dreaded threshold. I crossed it with him lugging 9 subjects through blood, sweat and tears.
So that’s it! I’m done! I heaved a sigh of relief when he finished and jetted off to Milan with friends for sun and fun.
He sent me a pic with the caption, “Love you, mummy- I’m grown now.” It made me cry.

Took my breath away! That sense of being ‘done’ but then, we are never done. Comes through so well! Ah, the seasons of life; for us…for them.
That picture is beautiful!

Thanks Jilly…You’re so right- we’re never ‘done’. Thank you 🙂
(He tells me that smiling in pics is ‘old school’- you’re supposed to look menacing- LOL!)

I’ve got pictures of my grandparents that are all serious. Tell him he is older than old-school.

Not quite the end, Viv – we examiners are still marking! Well done to you and your lovely son on making it to the end of students’ exam season. I’m not surprised you cried to see your baby fly. 🙂

They’ll fly off the nest in no time. To think they were just toddlers not so long ago!

Such a handsome and thoughtful son. A wonderful write. Now I shall give you a hint — with children who are now 41 and 43 with spouses of their own and children of their own….so grown-ups and our jobs quite done too…….but still our babies, our children….and we listen and watch and savor their lives as adults….and savor too, those times that have more and more space in between them, when our children ask for our advice, seek our help …Ah – you have me waxing sentimental here! 🙂
