“His mind’s all black thickets and blood”
from Songs of Unreason
I once knew a man
who spoke in tongues
of flaming fire
But you’d never guess
from his charming persona
A forked tongue
of charm and harm-
murmuring blessings
hissing black curses
whispering cursed blessings
until I begged,
‘No more!’

This is the kind of dark, unsettling poem the quote suggested to me when I saw it. The rabbits just burrowed their way in regardless.

Oh, I knew one of those, too. Took a long time to recover from.

Yes, I too have known a few and found them quite disturbing and unconvincing. ‘Charm and harm’ are is an appropriate description.

The serpent in Eden—giving you something you think you want (pretty glass beads, the gift of mortality) for something you can never recover.
