“Fear makes for good servants
and bravery is fraudulent”
~ Jim Harrison
from Vows
Your life is your life
Your death is yours alone
What will you sing of your fear and bravery
when you face the great beyond?
Will you delight in those triumphs
when your heart travelled by itself….all alone
When it forgot its rhythm in the face of terror
but still managed to drum on
(albeit a little too loudly)?
Or will you delight in the sure-footedness
that made all your dreams come true?
I prefer to believe that hubris achieves nought
and that
the victories we delight in
have been created by those tentative steps
we dared to take

This made me ache with both longing and dread for that ‘alone’ journey. Wonderfully done!

I agree: “hubris achieves nought”. Nice lines: “What will you sing of your fear and bravery
when you face the great beyond?”
