This journey of self-discovery
isn’t all it’s cracked up to be
Though my mind finds precious gems of me
my heart speaks a different language entirely
It speaks rubbish, as far as I can glean,
so I move to my mind for some discourse with me
Its thoughts are hard in its harsh delivery
This journey of self-discovery
has unearthed more worms than a crow can eat
and created more ‘mindfulness’ work for me
It isn’t all it’s cracked up to be
but worth the effort for a ‘less-faulty’ me
-for a mind less-hard and more distinguished
and a heart that at least speaks English
all worth the effort for a ‘less-faulty’ me

Clever word play but perhaps a bit hard on the old heart there Vivian 😉

Speaking English is good. It acts as a fairly apt translator between the mind and the heart.

“Has unearthed more worms than a crow can eat” I love that line because it is so true. This kind of journey is not an easy one to embark on, despite the hype. You have hit the nail on the head so to speak 🙂 there might be a pin in there somewhere – more smiles.

I like the play on words in the phrase ‘cracked up’ and these lines ring very true to me.

Yes, Viv, self-discovery is a rocky journey! I love the wordplay in this poem, with the word ‘cracked’ in one line linked to precious gems’ in the next. I like the personification in ‘my heart speaks a different language entirely’ (there is nothing wrong with that) and the idea of another kind of discourse with the mind. My favourite lines are:.
‘This journey of self-discovery
has unearthed more worms than a crow can eat’.

Thanks Kim. I find that the heart is far too emotional. The head’s better at communication. …I find.

I so relate. My mind is my harshest critic, lol. I cant count the number of times I find myself remembering something I said or did and say “stupid idiot” to myself. I think we need to extend ourselves some compassion but it is hard to remember that. I enjoyed your very relatable poem.

Oh… I wonder sometimes if those worms should be unearthed… maybe the crows are fat already
