This monster I keep
or does it keep me?
lives in my pocket
under lock and key
I count my victories
soul exploring mysteries
mind expounding theories
a respite to do ‘me’
Now and again
it tries to break free
wishing to roam
and keep me
under lock and key
Daily the struggle
deceptively subtle
this continuous battle
between
my monster and me

Karin is hosting Real Toads today with a writing exercise for those who are stymied in their writing. Her instructions : Take a letter, let a random word beginning with that letter arise in our minds, and then…. follow her other rules ..and see what happens. This is my take.

We all have our monsters. We all keep our monster(s) secret. You caught the feeling of shame and fear in this so very well.

Somehow this made me think of depression which can be a scary monster if not kept under lock and key. A friend of mine struggles with it, maybe that’s why it sprang to my mind first when reading this. But of course, there are all kinds of monsters that try to make life a bit more difficult if we let them

It is a solid first step to recognize the monster exists. Without that, people might be unaware when it takes over.

Such a monster is the worst.. always there trying to escape. Sometimes just a bad dream, at other times it’s there in living daylight.
