I have a feeling of déjà-vu writing this. However, try as I might, I can’t remember where I’ve alluded to this same topic in the past. So, at the risk of repeating myself, here goes:
Owning a pet has taught us so much as a family. For one thing, the kids are a lot less self-centred with having to care for Zeus’ every need. I’ve seen leadership skills emerge, where a glance is enough to stop Zeus’ irritating habit of whining when he wants to get his own way. The greatest lesson this pooch has taught us is to face each new day with great enthusiasm, because-let’s face it- yesterday’s soared…..just…gone.
Every morning is the same; he makes a beeline for each of us, as though drawn like a magnet– tail wagging at full speed. A large paw is planted on a forehead (preventing resistance), followed by a hearty kiss which elicits muffled screams. Not bothered, Zeus bounds to the next room in search of his next victim. And so a new day is welcomed…..every day.
greeting each morning
with leaps, french kisses and joy
yesterday is gone

Ted, he is my eldest son’s dog, on holiday with us as they can’t have a dog in their present accommodation, he is a Lhasa, he’s been here a few months and has attached himself to my youngest son…..I’m afraid I fail as a dog person.

They are such great companions. Zeus says ‘woof’ to Ted 🙂

I was reading where Lhasa’s were bred to signal a warning in the Buddhist monastries should there be an intruder…well I can attest to that as Ted seems to be able hear anyone coming into our place from a long way off….So he sends back a woof woof to Zeus…

This is the joy of dogs, Vivian – each greeting is as full of joy as if they have not seen you for ages. Such grand reunions, such bliss! Zeus is a beauty. You are so lucky to have him. I am not allowed to have animals where I live, and it is very hard for a dog-lover like me to be without a dog. Sigh. Give Zeus a big hug from me and thanks for writing to the prompt.

My corgi starts the day with a food dance, and then he gets down to licking everyone. Cute piece.

Zeus sounds like a real super dog! He reminds me of my old dog Daisy, who loved to give good morning kisses and had to hold my head in her paws while doing it, as if my noggin were her ball, lol. My ex thought it was “weird’ but I always loved that she did that. Zeus is sich a perfect name for a noble shepherd. I love the pic with the blanket. My dog Zacky Peanut LOVES to steal the blanket and crawl under it, then pop his head out so he looks like the Sheik of Araby.

Vivian, I love your haibun of what a dog does for a family and for children. We’ve always had dogs for our kids, and at times, I know each of the kids thought the dog was their only real friend.

I love it… some dogs seems so happy and eager… cats are more careful. My sister used to have both a cat and a dog, and the dog had learned the trick of hunting the cat into my sister bedrooms… So the cat got the blame for waking up them… not fair, but they learned.

Zeus seems to be a nice family dog. Vivian, you are fortunate to have him. Sounds like he keeps things going in a good mood over there. I have it that dogs have no idea of amount of time that passes.
