The notice stuck to the tree took me by complete surprise. When my builder had spoken of roots undermining my home, I’d never thought it would come to this. I’d grown up with that tree. Her leaves had cast shadows on my bedroom wall ever since I was born. Going indoors, I see grandpa in his chair.
“They’re unearthing and getting rid of the tree!”
Grandpa stills. He beckons me and fixes his rheumy eyes on mine.
“Grandma did not run away all those years ago, ” he whispers .
“So where. ..?” I started but stopped as my eyes follow his to the base of the tree.
