Why am I in this nightmare?
Fear, when did you show up?
Did you hear the rustling in my heart ?
Why do you hide?
Is it because you’ve changed your face?
Or are you now a trapped bird in a cage?
Or have you coiled into a snake
ready to strike?
Why do you hide?
Have you built a wall of protection?
Or become invisible – avoiding detection?
Why resist my intervention?
Why do you hide?
Why do you pretend to be anger?
Why do you wear the face of pride?
Why do you hide?
Why do you keep changing your disguise?
Tonight’s prompt : “write poetry consisting only of questions”.

Hiding is like changing a disguise when it is who we are that is hiding and people too easily see through it.

Nice in-depth deposition of Mr. Fear–enjoyed the refrain, internal rhymes. 1) the nightmare has traveled into reality 2) fear materialized when you welcomed it. 3) fear is deaf to all but the vibes of heartbreak 4 it hides because it is a coward.

Bingo! ‘Tis the bane of human nature; fear masquerading as anger, hate etc

very evocative – just the thought of someone changing their face is nightmarish! I particularly like the line: ‘Did you hear the rustling in my heart ?’

Fear is a great subject for questions… maybe the questions themselves cause the anxiety, really nice observation. Also love how you dug deep into the cause of those questions in a relationship which is the most common cause. Well done.

The image was very interesting and I did enjoy contemplating the many faces of fear. They come out often in young people and sometimes like you have voiced it would be better to know why they hide.

“Why do you pretend to be anger” stands out in this evocative write. Criticism of others is often rooted in fear in ourselves. Good write!

Fear is like an unwelcomed acquaintance showing up. We’ve met them through the years in different scenarios and with different faces, yet they keep coming back out of hiding, sometimes actually barging in without notice. My daughter recently dropped out of second year university due to a severe anxiety disorder that hit her like a ton of bricks. Nicely written piece on fear, Vivian.

Ah Olga…. i see you’re very familiar with this phenomenon. Always a different face, always uninvited….. something to be fought against. Hope your baby finds her feet soon. Bless you 🙂
